Let's Get This Over With

I’ve never been on this road before,
But I swear I’ve been on one that looks just like it.
You promise me we’re gonna go far.
I say under my breath, “I highly doubt it.”
I’ve never been on this road before,
But I’m noticing some things that look familiar.
I know that I have been wrong before,
But I think that this time you might be mistaken.

Clean Enough

At this point it doesn’t even matter anymore.
I’ve given up enough to make it easy.
And although my optimism has been wounded it has not been broken,
I don’t see the need to call it quits.
I’m not stubborn, I’m determined to keep the wheels inside me turning,
Traveling on the road that I see fit.
Looking at my hands and knowing what I’ve touched
I wonder how long
Before they are clean enough
'Cause I know what lies ahead.
My irresponsibility is matched only by
The weighing guilt of my procrastination.
I’m finally feeling real,
I can taste the blood and my age is tangible.
I’m sure that my Achilles heel is knowing what I know and that’s too much.
Looking at my hands and knowing what I’ve touched
I wonder how long
Before they are clean enough
'Cause I know what lies ahead.
It didn’t happen right, but unless it happened wrong, it wouldn’t have happened at all.
Looking at my hands and knowing what I’ve touched
I wonder how long
Before they are clean enough
'Cause I know what lies ahead.
How long 'till I know that my hands are clean?
Look what I've done.

Speechless

The kiss was transcendent,
It took her breath away,
But the cadence of her heartbeat confessed more than she could ever say.
"This is the one.
What have I done to earn a place in her arms?
Never again will I be companionless.
Is this what heaven’s like?"
For the first time he was speechless,
Was this a new and perfect high?
He was silent as he sifted through these apprehensions in his mind.
"Is he the one?
What have I done? What if I kiss him again?
How can I be sure that my heart is safe?
I should just walk away."
This was the place they met, a poetic location for it all to end.
They’d be training for months, now the gloves come off,
Looks like the show’s about to start.
“What was it like when you decided you would tear down my walls?”
“What makes you think eventually you wouldn’t have done the same to me?”
You see, love isn’t fair and I don’t know where you got the idea that someone wins.
You just close your eyes and let the dice fall from you hands.
We’ll both take the fall, it’s nobody’s fault.
I’m not gonna let you take the blame.
Strangers now the dust had settled, they both walked away.
From this high up, if someone falls, that’ll be the end.

Be Here

I’d heard about love, was told that it existed.
Forever elusive, well it seemed I always missed it.
But I saw it, watched it, felt it, held it, kept it that night.
Love poured from your soul, I washed myself in its light.
You plant a kiss upon my cheek and I soon became defenseless.
Time had slowed, the moon showed up,
And it seemed that the consensus
Was that we were to be forever tied to this moment,
Like stars that didn’t choose their place.
We too had been chosen.
So stay with me, we got nowhere to go.
We can remove ourselves and watch the world below.
Close your eyes, take in a slow deep breath.
Oh, won’t you be right here tonight.
You had heard about love
Had your dreams when you were younger.
Then you got your heart broke,
Told yourself that you would not be just another
Hopelessly romantic, wide-eyed victim of this far fetched crazy idea,
But then you opened up your heart.
So stay with me, we got nowhere to go.
We can remove ourselves and watch the world below.
Close your eyes, take in a slow deep breath.
Oh, won’t you be right here tonight.

Moments are far more significant
Once they’ve grown into a memory.
Don’t forget the sweat and the blistered palms.
Your mouth is dry, let’s wash it all away.
Help me peel off these jeans, it’s time for a costume change.
Let’s prepare for the next scene.
It isn’t lights out ‘till 9,
That’s when the night comes alive.
Walk through the smoke with me.
It’s 1am and, yeah, they know you.
Fleeting youth, where is it headed?
The path’s unclear to you, but you’re gonna let it.
Don’t forget the tears and the piano keys,
Your blood-stained cheek, let’s wash it all away.
Age, it doesn’t matter, there’s death and life.
Prepare for the former but don’t waste the latter.
It isn’t lights out ‘till 9,
That’s when the night comes alive.
Walk through the smoke with me.
It’s 2am and, yeah, they know you.
And you’ll tell your kids that your saw the sun,
And the stories you weave are the one’s they’ll love.
With each step you took the sidewalk formed
Moving forward toward the life you chose.
The right place was when it was the right time,
And time was always on somebody’s side.
You saw their eyes they don’t have to show you.
It’s 3am and, yeah, they know you.
